Shoulder pain is very common, and it is often the result of overuse injuries. Houston shoulder pain is an injury to the shoulder joint. This occurs when the soft tissue and ligaments that stabilize the shoulder become injured, causing pain and stiffness in the joint.
The shoulder includes several joints, including:
Anterior (front) deltoid: Part of the deltoid muscle that extends from the front of your upper arm to your collarbone
Posterior (back) deltoid: Part of the deltoid muscle that extends from your upper arm to your lower back
Subscapularis: Part of the subscapularis muscle that extends from your lower back to your collarbone
Coracobrachialis: Another part of the subscapularis muscle on the opposite side of its attachment point
Rotator cuff muscles: Muscles that surround and support the joint capsule, including supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularis, supraspinatus/teres minor complex, including subscapularis.
What are the causes of shoulder pain?
Leading causes of shoulder pain include;
Arthritis: Arthritis causes inflammation in a joint or bony area, which results in pain when you move or use that joint. Shoulder arthritis occurs when there’s too much wear and tear over years of repeated movement with poor posture and muscle balance.
Avascular necrosis: This is the most common cause of shoulder pain and is most commonly found in people over 50 years old. The condition occurs when small blood vessels in the shoulder become damaged and die, causing swelling, pain, and stiffness. Patients may also experience shooting pains or numbness in their shoulders. To diagnose avascular necrosis, your doctor will perform an MRI scan to determine whether there is active bone loss or whether it has already occurred. If it has happened, treatment will involve surgery to remove the damaged tissue and replace it with healthy tissue.
Brachial plexus injury: A brachial plexus is a group of nerves that pass through the neck and into the upper part of the arm, separating into smaller bundles as they go. These nerves control movement and feeling in the upper arm, hand, and parts of the chest. The most common cause of brachial plexus injuries is birth trauma or sports injuries. These injuries result to shoulder pain.
Dislocated shoulders: Dislocated shoulders often require medical attention to correct. Treatment typically involves reducing the dislocation to prevent further damage to the ligaments and tendons surrounding the joint. Once reduction has been performed, physical therapy is usually recommended to help strengthen the muscles around the joint and decrease the likelihood of recurrence.
Broken collarbone: A break in the collarbone can occur in various ways, but it typically happens after a fall or some impact on the shoulder area. It is often accompanied by excruciating pain, which radiates from the shoulder to the arm and even down to the fingers. To treat this type of shoulder pain, you will want to seek immediate medical attention – emergency room doctors will then set your bone.
Shoulders are complex joints, and they are prone to many problems. The most common cause of shoulder pain is injury, a sprain or strain from an impact or fall, a sudden overuse injury from activities like swimming or weight lifting, or arthritis due to wear and tear from years of use. Whatever the cause of the pain, it would be best to get an accurate diagnosis from your doctor. Your doctor will examine you physically, run some tests to evaluate your particular issues, and develop a treatment plan.
