Ways to Use Eucalyptus Oil for Sinus Congestion

Native to Australia, Eucalyptus Globulus is an evergreen tree that is cultivated globally. Its leaves are steam-distilled to produce a highly concentrated oil that serves several medical purposes. Many doctors since at least 1788 have been leveraging its medicinal properties for treating chest problems and colic. By the late 1800s, they also started prescribing this essential oil for respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, asthma, coughs, and flu.

Sinus congestion is one of many conditions it can help with successfully. While you might always need some medication, eucalyptus is useful for mitigating the sinus pain and easing up the recovery process. It contains 1, 8-cineole, which helps reduce nasal congestion. Besides, its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties help it reduce inflammation in sinus cavities.

However, if you are planning to use it topically, you should stop right there. Eucalyptus essential oil is quite strong in its pure form; thus, you should use it in a diluted form. Other than that, steam inhalation is a great way to use this fragrant for the betterment of your congested nose.

STEAM INHALATION

A good antiseptic, eucalyptus essential oil can be used via steam inhalation for nasal congestion. This method will relieve cold, blocked nose, and headache issues.

All you will need is a tub of hot water and this essence.

Firstly, pour a few drops of this oil into the tub of hot water. Secondly, lean over the tub so that you can inhale the steaming vapor. Lastly, do it for a few minutes or till when you feel some relief.

You must try this at least twice a day for better and quicker results.

DILUTION

As per anecdotal evidence, it is suggested that using the diluted form of this oil is requisite for a quite intense condition. For this, you will need a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil that will make the effect of the essential oil more tolerable.

Just blend 1-5 drops of the eucalyptus oil and 1 ounce of olive or almond oil. After mixing them, apply the diluted solution topically on the chest and throat.

Doctors prescribe a once-a-day application of this diluted solution.

Other Ways

Inhaling Directly: Simply, put a few drops of the eucalyptus oil into a tissue, hold it near the face, and gently breathe in. But make sure it doesn’t get on your skin as that might cause irritation.

Adding to a Bath: Add a few drops of the fragrant into a bathtub filled with warm water and gently inhale while soaking.

A patch test is highly recommended on allergic skin by applying a few drops of the diluted solution to the skin. If there is no reaction within 24 hours, it is good to go.

Precautions to Take When Using Eucalyptus Oil

If you use it in raw form, it can potentially burn your skin. Also, if you have sensitive skin or any other skin-related issues, it should be avoided. Moreover, pregnant women, as well as infants and children, should be kept away from this essential oil, as it is not safe for them to use.

What to Look for?

The rule says that it helps only when it’s pure. So, trust something like Young Living essential oils as these pure-grade natural products assure you with the quality that not everyone offers.

Patients who suffer from sinus often bear a weak immune system. Therefore, they should ensure a healthy diet for themselves. Also, they must drink warm liquids to help thin the mucus and relax the blockage. And if the problem persists even after using eucalyptus oil in either of the foregoing ways, consult a doctor for treatment.
