The Medicine Wheel is an important emblem. Although the Medicine Wheel isn’t used by all indigenous peoples due to its perceived colonial nature, those who do adhere to it adhere to their traditions and the teachings of their Elders and medicine people.
Our bodily, mental, emotional, and spiritual lives are all intertwined with one another, as we learn from the medicine wheel healing. We can’t be happy and healthy if we don’t have both in the right proportions. Many different ways of expressing this basic concept can be found in the book. Because they are just concepts, the medicine wheel may help us see and comprehend things we otherwise wouldn’t be able to.
Four-Way Significances
The Medicine Wheel has varying meanings among the many indigenous peoples. There are four colours associated with each of the four corners of the Earth: East (black), South (red), West (yellow), and North (white/yellow). Father Sky, Mother Earth, and Spirit Tree—all of which signify aspects of good health and the cycles of life—are all represented in it, as are the Four Directions.
- Adulthood and old age are the last stages of life.
- Annual cycles: spring, summer, winter, and autumn.
- Spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and bodily aspects of life
- Fire (or sun), air, water, and earth are all-natural elements.
- Animals: eagle, bear, wolf, buffalo, and a plethora of others
- Tobacco, sweetgrass, sage, and cedar are common ceremonial plants.
